Our current educational system is trying to prevent bullying through campaign advertising. But, it’s never going to prevent it. You have to bully a bully, because talk isn’t going to work! Unless, it’s from someone they fear! Someone who has the power to do something about it!
Now days, it’s much worse, since kids can videotape the whole scenario. The power of bullying another human being is like a drug and being able to record the incident, they can relive it, getting their sick kicks over and over again.
Schools are covering up the problems that exist with bullying. Why? Well, what do you expect a teacher to do about it, when the administrators won’t back them up. And, why don’t the administrators do their job, because they don’t have anyone to back them. They’re bullied like the rest of the educational system, because someone else is pulling the strings. Who’s going to bully the bully?
As it came to dealing with a bully in my classroom, I dealt with it in my own way. The culprit was placed in time-out, permanently, until he/she admitted to harassing another student. Usually, it took almost the entire day before he/she looked me square in the eye and admitted to bullying someone else and the reason for his/her action. Surprisingly, the bully would become friends with the one he/she was bullying and I didn’t encounter any further problems. But, that was before parents could dominate the educational scene. Just about everything you can and can’t do is dictated by the parent. It’s the same as bullying! Parents are bullying the teachers, because teachers aren’t respected by our society.
In Barbara’s real estate career, she did have to deal with a prominent bully and it was none other than Donald Trump. Donald is a mega-shark, especially with ALL and I mean ALL of his financial holdings. I was surprised to discover that some of his investments are close to my home and I don’t live in New York! This mega-shark certainly has his hands in many cookie jars.
Barbara survived dealing with this mega-shark when it came to receiving a commission two of her staff members and she rightfully deserved for selling Trump’s Plaza Hotel to a China corporation. He actually tried to sue Barbara, rather than pay the commission. Barbara hired one of the best attorneys in New York to take her case. His name was Richard Seltzer. She knew she needed a bully to fight a bully and therefore succeeded in swimming in a mega-shark’s infested water. As the saying goes, when thrown in the water, you either sink or swim!
In closing, I would like to share the following quote found in, The Urantia Book, (book about Earth’s civilization): “The survival of democracy is dependent on successful representative government; and that is conditioned upon the practice of electing to public offices only those individuals who are technically trained, intellectually competent, socially loyal, and morally fit. Only by such provisions can government of the people, by the people, and for the people be preserved.”
Barbara’s mother was right when she said, “You’ve got to bully a bully!” Barbara learned this fact of life while she was still at home living with her parents. Her younger brother, Tommy, had a problem with a boy in the neighborhood. John, Tommy’s older brother, was willing to help, but Barbara’s mother knew that Tommy’s problem was solved by getting a much, larger boy involved. A family friend had an older son that was perfect for the job. As such, no more bully problems for Tommy.
In my family, my older brother, Marvin, dealt with any and all bully problems his siblings may have. All I had to do when being bullied was to give my brother’s name. That worked for as long as Marvin was going to school. But, when he graduated from high school and joined the Air Force, our protection from being bullied no longer existed. It was like dealing with a pack of wolves for my brother, Keith, me, and my younger brother, Warren. None of us were good at confrontations. Except, there was one time when I beat up three kids at the same time to protect Warren, it was like some maternal instinct kicked in and I had this exuberant power.
Perhaps, the reason Marvin was able to fight had to do with our dad. After all, Dad had been a graduate from Camp X. Mother would always tell us that Dad could take three men down at once. She described him as being a real man’s man. Marvin, being the oldest, had been taught a few, fighting moves before PTSD took over Dad’s life. Dad was trapped in the relentless nightmare of fighting overseas. There was one time when Dad stated he had done some bad things, things he regretted.
So, when it came to dealing with bullies on my own, I used wit rather than fist. I learned to talk the bully out of harming me. There were times when divine intervention protected me from being assaulted. For example, one time when I was walking home from high school, I had an strong urge to take a different path. It was like someone walking beside me nudging me to go this way and not that way. The route I took was several streets over. As I crossed a road that would intercept the route I normally took, I glanced down it and saw a gang of girls waiting for me. I gave a sign of relief. Well, from that moment on, or so I had thought, I’d take the scenic route to and from school.
About a week later, Becky asked if I’d like to walk home with her in the afternoons. Now, the biggest bully in my neighborhood was Becky. Becky wasn’t part of that girl gang. She hung out with the boys. In fact, Becky acted more like a boy than a girl. She lived several houses down from me. Why she wanted to help me, I had no idea at that time? But, I do now!
Barbara has been married twice. Her second husband is retired military. Barbara had a child late in life and has an adopted daughter who has learning disabilities.
I’ve only been married once. My husband is retired military. I have three children, all born before I turned 32. So, unlike Barbara, I didn’t have any children late in life. However, I do understand being the mother of a child with special needs. All three of my children have a hidden disability. My oldest has central auditory processing disorder. My son has mild cerebral palsy and also was diagnosed as having pervasive developmental disorder. After he graduated from college, he participated in a green blood chelation for two years, along with a change in diet, before returning to his neurologist. His neurologist has stated that my son was misdiagnosed. He never had PDD. As for my youngest child, she was diagnosed as having glaucoma along with photophobia. Despite maintaining a teaching position and my husband being sent on numerous deployments, I had to fight for my children’s rights. That’s when I learned to be assertive, like Barbara, who learned to survive in business among the sharks.
Barbara endured much struggle and hardship as she built her company from the ground up. I, too, struggled in maintaining a teaching career and being my children’s advocate as I learned to swim in shark-infested waters.
Barbara can hold her head up high and not because she’s a millionaire, but because she became successful despite the odds. She certainly wasn’t born with a silver spoon in hand. Barbara learned to use what she had and to take chances. Not, everyone can do that! Barbara is an individual worth admiring!
As for myself, I can hold my head up high, too. I managed to stay in the teaching field for forty years, while my husband retired from the Navy. We both retired with our heads held high. All three of my children graduated from college, despite the odds. All three graduated with honors.
Barbara and I are alike in that we didn’t give up. We were both determined to succeed when the odds were stacked against us. Of course, Barbara’s was in business and mine was with family and education.
I’ve never met Barbara Corcoran in person. Despite her obvious wealth, we do have some things in common regarding our life’s path. Now, here’s how I see it:
Barbara was born in a family of ten children. Her father worked two jobs, while her mother remained a housewife. They lived on the first floor of a three story house. Her brothers share one room, while her sisters share another. Barbara’s mother and father slept on a fold-out couch in the living room.
I was born in a family of four children. My father was the owner of Brown Construction Company. He started his business after he was honorably discharged from serving as a World War II Army Officer during World War II. Ten years later, after his honorable discharge, my father began to suffer from PTSD and we nearly lost everything. Barbara’s slept together, but mine didn’t. Father needed a bedroom to himself because of his night terrors. My brothers shared the living room, while I slept in the same bedroom with my mother.
Barbara didn’t make good grades in school. In fact, she mostly made all D’s. Well, at least she passed! Yet, she did have ambition and learn to use the talents she had to persevere through the rough times when she started her real estate business. Barbara did go to college to earn a degree in education.
I made mostly Bs and Cs throughout my years in public school. Two years before graduating from high school, my father received a disability rating from the Veteran’s Administration as being 100 percent, service-connected. As such, I received funding to go to a four-year college. I graduated with a degree in education.
After college, Barbara moved to New York City with her boyfriend. He gave her a loan to start a real estate business. I admire Barbara for taking a chance. It takes guts to move away from her family and friends. I’m truly glad that she persevered and became successful.
After I graduated from college, I move to a rural school district in Florida because where I live there was a freeze on hiring teachers. I began my teaching career in Hardee County, Florida and worked there for three years before taking to explore greener pastures.
Growing up in Florida, I was taught that the right to an education was a privilege and well-respected. My parents respected the teachers, because they knew that teachers were highly-trained to educate my three brothers and me. Teachers were allowed to discipline students and parents supported it. Corporal punishment was used, but not as often as one may think. Realistically, it was used as the last resort before suspension. Parents preferred that corporal punishment was used rather than suspend their child from school. There was a code of discipline we followed. When a rule was broken, punishment was delivered. Remember, a lack of boundaries invites a lack of respect.
Now days, there is still a code of rules and procedures, but it’s not implemented. Sure, it’s signed by the parents, but it’s not enforced. It’s not supported by the ‘powers-that-be.’ Teachers must be allowed to be the one in charge and students must learn to respect that! Recently, I watched a videotape of a teacher being assaulted by a student in the classroom on YouTube and this whole scenario was caused by the student having a cell phone in class.
Students are required to keep their cell phone turned off during classroom instruction. It’s a rule that must be followed and the teacher was doing his job. At that time, no one tried to intervene. No one called for help. The students just stood around and watched. Why didn’t someone do something? The reason is that they didn’t respect the teacher or they were afraid of the aggressive student. Once again, the lack of boundaries invites a lack of respect.
I believe that the reason discipline in many schools has gotten out of control, is due to money. Who stands to win from allowing students to become disruptive, which destroys the right for our children to have a public education? What better way to destroy society than through the lack of receiving a quality education. Without an education, how can one read between the lines? How can one question or to understand their unalienable rights and that among these rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, as expressed in the Declaration of Independence, and as stated in this document, when the government is not functioning to keep our society safe, then it’s time for a new government. I’m repeating this statement again, ‘the lack of boundaries invites a lack of respect.’
When it comes to gun control, who stands to win? The tragedy that happened in Parkland increased the stock price for the maker of the AR-15. According to research, shares of stock rise following a mass shooting, because that’s when people want to buy guns and ammunition.
Out of curiosity, I decided to examine President Trump’s massive investment holdings to determine if he would benefit from the sale of automatic weapons. Well, unless it’s hidden in some hedge fund, there’s not any sign of him benefitting from the sales of the AR-15. Unfortunately, Federal employees, such as our senators have the option of investing in a retirement fund which benefits from the sale of guns. The finger is being pointed at certain Democratic senators, as well as former President Obama. However, they have tried to do something about gun control. So, due to common sense, if the Republicans aren’t trying to protect the safety of our people after 346 mass shootings had occurred in 2017 (the worst year in U.S. history), then their hand is deep-down in that cookie jar. If they’re so worried about having a retirement income, then why aren’t they investing in rebuilding our infrastructure or in universal healthcare through the use of new CBD competitive, healthcare products?
Despite all of the flaws in today’s society, involving a crumbling educational system and greased-palm politicians, many students, parents, and teachers are working together to put an end to gun violence. For the first time, in a long time, our citizens have a common goal. Hopefully, while they’re working on this issue, they’ll take into consideration the rebuilding of our educational system which includes considering the needs of students and giving respect back to the teachers.
There’s a national school walkout planned for March 14th. Another is planned for April 20th, the anniversary of the mass shooting that occurred at Columbine High School. A Lack of Boundaries Invites a Lack of Respect: School Violence, Crumbling Educational System and Greasy-Palmed Politicians part one
My brother, Warren, said it correctly when he posted on Facebook, “What in the hell is going on?” (Read his entire post at the bottom of this article.) Yes, I agree what is going on? Why hasn’t Congress done anything about these horrible mass shootings? Schools use to be safe!
Warren and I would never have thought of bringing a gun to school. We kept our hands off the rifle our father had kept in his bedroom closet. We knew where he kept the bullets, since the rifle wasn’t loaded.
Maybe, it’s because we knew the boundaries. We respected our parents, as well as our teachers. Most importantly, perhaps it’s because we knew it was wrong to cross the line, since we knew the consequences.
As for gun violence, Warren and I lived in a time when it didn’t exist. We had the freedom to go outside and play. We didn’t have to worry about someone firing a gun at us. Maybe, it’s because it wasn’t part of our culture at that time. We didn’t have video games, especially those that involved shooting someone. However, there were some violent movies that were produced, but we weren’t allowed to watch them! Our parents made sure of that!
As a former teacher, I’ve heard some of my students discuss the violent video games they played and the violent movies they watch at home. Ironically, my students were only six years old! Yet, the parents of these children would be the first ones to complain if a movie was shown at school that didn’t have a “G” rating! Very seldom, do these children complete their homework and/or read at home. But, once again, their parents would be the first to complain about report card grades. As I had continued to teach in the classroom, I’ve seen more and more parents become too demanding when it’s obvious they’re using teachers as society’s scapegoats. The best parents don’t do that! Yes, there are some decent and supportive parents that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with. So, society hasn’t completely fallen through the cracks of “I don’t give a damn about you, because all I care about is making that extra buck!”
In part three, I mentioned about new products invented in 2017. There are a number of them presented in Time Magazine (November/December 2017 Issue). For starters, there is a shoe engineered to boost performance called, “Futurecraft 4D,” being manufactured by Adidas. The midsole of this shoe has a 3-D print process tailored to fit the needs of the wearer. The Futurecraft 4D midsoles can be printed in as little as two hours. Adidas can produce them in stores.
Another new product developed by Rihanna, is makeup shades for every skin tone. Rihanna’s line, Fenty Beauty, launched 40 shades of foundation. Rihanna believes that makeup is like a secret weapon. It can go from very subtle to a complete transformation.
The final product I’d like to mention is glasses that give sight to the blind. There are millions of people in the world that are legally blind. These individuals try to navigate in a visual world by using support canes and guide dogs, but these items cannot mimic actual vision for the blind. But, the eSight 3 can. It’s the world’s most powerful pair of glasses. Once when users put on eSight, it records high-definition video and uses magnification, contrast, and proprietary algorithms to enhance that imagery into something the legally blind can see. These glasses allow them to partake in a variety of activities, including sports that would otherwise be off-limits.
So, when it comes to the wonderful new products, one must give credit to the use of imagination. Where would our world be without it? Who’s to say that in the future, one of Tyra Wooley’s students creates a product that will change our world for the better, just like the inventions stated above? Of course, only time will tell. But, we do know for sure, that it takes imagination to create and it should be facilitated by special teachers like Tyra Wooley!
As previously mentioned in part two, Walter Isaacson, wrote an article in Time Magazine about the making of a genius. Mr. Isaacson believes that smart people are a dime a dozen. Many of them don’t amount to much. However, being a genius is different than being supersmart.
I’d have to agree with Walter Isaacson, because I’ve known a number of individuals in my life who were really smart, but didn’t do much of anything. Some of them were friends I knew in high school. They were the slackers. They never really tried to do anything outside the box. It was like they lacked the imagination to try
Imagination is definitely the key towards investing in one’s curiosity. Benjamin Franklin had little formal education, but did have a highly, developed imagination to invent a rod to tame electricity. He devised clean-burning stoves, charts of the Gulf Stream, and bifocal glasses.
Another well-known odd individual was Albert Einstein. He was slow in learning to speak as a child. However, his slow verbal development allowed him to observe the wonderment of the world he lived in. It was Einstein who revolutionized our understanding of the universe by coming up with the two pillars of contemporary physics: the theory of relativity and the quantum theory.
Of course, our society has profited from the inventions of Benjamin Franklin and in space exploration from Albert Einstein. What these two geniuses had accomplished is widely-known. But, in today’s society, we might not ever learn if there was one individual or a team when it comes to the new inventions of 2017.
Ms. Tyra Wooley has been a pre-kindergarten teacher for twenty-one years. She was inspired to become a teacher by her mother. Tyra as a young girl would observe her mother’s delight in teaching others. Ms. Wooley became involved in the teaching profession by helping her mother with grading papers and putting up bulletin boards. So, it didn’t come as any surprise that Tyra wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps to become a teacher.
Ms. Wooley truly believes that in order to plant the seeds of success in young children, one must allow them an opportunity to use their imagination. Obviously, Tyra was thrilled as being one of the recipients to obtain an Imagination Playground for her school.
The Imagination Playground is kept in the school’s gym. Classroom teachers are given a designated time to bring their class to the gym, so the students can actively engage in building and creating their architectural projects. Teachers, such as Tyra, are facilitators watching and encouraging their students to socialize, work together in small groups, build, and take chances in how their creative endeavors turn out.
According to the author, Walter Isaacson, who wrote the article, “The Making of Genius,” published in Time Magazine (November/December 2017 Issue), states that what matters is creativity, the ability to apply imagination to almost any situation.
His article gives examples of some of the most famous geniuses our world has ever known.

Last year, Tyra Wooley, never thought that she would win an Imagination Playground, not just for her class, but for Willoughby Elementary School in Norfolk, Virginia. This unique playground was created and manufactured by Kaboom.
Kaboom was offering a limited number of grants to schools in wanting to acquire an Imagination Playground. More specifically, Kaboom was interested in schools that had a high student population of military dependents. Willoughby Elementary School was one such school having a large student population of military dependents.
Ms.Wooley completed the two part process in becoming a grant recipient. However, since Willoughby Elementary School was going through the process of becoming only a Pre-K Center the following year, the playground would be on a smaller scale suitable for younger children. As such, Ms.Wooley joined with Sewells Point Elementary School in the celebration process, since this school would acquire a larger playground to accommodate its elementary student population.
Before Tyra Wooley completed a grant proposal to acquire an Imagination Playground for her school, she had always believed in the importance of fostering creativity in young children. She believes that students need an opportunity to make decisions, to take chances, and to learn from one’s mistakes. After all, that’s part of life.
